Should I Get a Diesel, Propane or Electric Forklift?

Forklifts are the unsung powerhouses/workhouses of warehouses and job sites. They have the power and efficiency to get the job done quickly and with ease.

But here’s a surprising fact.

Not all forklifts are the same.

Yes, that is where almost 55% of owners fail to differentiate and buy one that’s different from their requirements. That results in nothing but massive losses.

There are several types of forklifts, each with unique features and benefits. So, how to decide if you need an electric, propane, or diesel-powered forklift?

Keep reading this blog as Kanoo Machinery unveils the features and benefits of each forklift that can eventually help in making your decision.

Diesel Forklifts

If you don’t already know this, each forklift has its advantages and disadvantages, so your choice ultimately comes down to a matter of priorities. These often differ depending on your work environment and personal preferences.

Below is an outline of the three forklift types that can help you weigh the pros and cons of each and assist you in making the best decision.

  • Diesel

Diesel forklifts are very popular, thanks to their powerful performance. If you need a forklift to transport heavy-duty loads outside over uneven terrain, diesel forklifts are unarguably the best choice for the job. The reason for this is that these vehicles are built to maneuver over rough terrain with ease.

They tend to cost less than their electric counterparts, but they are costlier than a propane model. While their maintenance costs might be higher, they do last longer than a propane model. Diesel forklifts are made to be tough and to work outside on the larger and demanding jobs. Diesel forklifts offer some great benefits to the other two power sources. They have more torque than their counterparts. And because they give off emissions that have a strong odor, they are used outdoors instead of indoors.

  • Propane

Propane-powered forklifts also go by the monikers “LP Gas,” “LP,” or “LPG” (Liquified Petroleum Gas.) Regarding size, they occupy the middle ground between diesel and electric forklifts. And regarding their ideal environment — they can be comfortably operated both indoors and outdoors. When it comes to maintenance, propane-powered forklifts have some pros and cons compared to the other forklifts. As LPG can last a healthy amount of time between refuels, its maintenance is less demanding in terms of downtime.

From the time you refuel an LPG to the next time you have to refuel it, the forklift should provide you with a consistent level of power. However, the cost of LPG fuel tanks is much higher than it is for diesel-powered trucks. Furthermore, the fuel tank on LPG also has a bad reputation due to the fact it can obscure the rear-view vision of operators during tasks.

  • Electric

As the name suggests, electric forklifts don’t operate via a generic fuel source like gas; instead, they operate on batteries. Electric forklifts are great for loading, unloading, and transporting products indoors, especially if you’re looking for a sustainable way to do so. The battery power source in an electric truck is an eco-friendly alternative to propane and diesel, though that does not mean you do not need to perform routine maintenance.
